THE DEMISE OF GLAMOUR MAGAZINE

October 18, 2017

Glamour magazine has always held a special place in my heart. Just like most people in the UK, when I started my second year of A levels, I was getting question regularly about what I wanted to do with the rest of my life, and what I was going to be doing in uni. At this point I had been studying modern history, statistic maths, welsh, and psychology. And honestly, I didn't see myself doing any of these things.

One day I was sat flicking through Glamour when I saw a feature called "How I got my job at Glamour", and it clicked that I'd love to go down that path. So I signed up to do a third year of A levels, where I did first and second year of media studies, as well as both years of photography, in one year.

It took a lot of energy and effort to get all the work done throughout the year, but I was passionate, so I could get on a degree to finally work at Glamour. I am now in my third year, and will be graduating in 2018, so the news about Glamour magazine going online, and only printing bi-annually, was a major shock to me.

When the press release came out, I actually felt a little lost, and started to question a lot of things. And as a journalism student, we regularly discuss print and whether it's a dying medium... but I didn't expect this to happen to Glamour. I didn't expect it to happen to my dream publication.

But when I began to think of the reason why, I began to wonder whether social media and the rise of 'influencers' is the reason. Glossy magazines would rely on advertisement from brands, and partnerships to run the magazine. However, with the rise of social media, and brands subsequently working with big accounts, how effective is advertising in magazines in 2017?

  1. I've got countless copies of Glamour magazines currently stacked up in my room and it makes me so sad they're only printing bi-annually. There's just something about flicking through a book or magazine which is so much better than online! xo
