So it's coming to that time of year when people in university are probably having the talk with their friends about where they plan to live next year. It's a stressful time, I won't lie to you, but hopefully these tips will help!
Choosing your housemates. When choosing the people who you want to move in with, you firstly need to remember that there will still be months and months before you actually move in. So make sure that they are people you will still talk to and get on with before you sign anything! If you are struggling to find people, think about the people you are currently living with, people on your course, and people in any societies or groups you are in. And if you are still struggling, there is probably a place in your university to help look for other people to join in on a house share.
Deciding a budget. Obviously you need to figure out how much money you can afford to spend on rent. The prices of houses differ depending on where you go to university, and even where in that town/city they are. But figure out how much you can afford, and stick to it. But make sure that you also take into consideration that the majority of places will not include bills, and you'll need to figure that out too.
Research, research, research! Search for so many letting agents, look for private landlords and visit as many properties as you can. Look at the area, find out far it is to uni, where the nearest supermarket is, what the public transport is like around the area, if there is a gym, or a library, or anything else you need/wants. Ask the letting agency, landlord or even current tenants about any questions you may have.
Sign the contract. Once you have all this sorted and you've all chosen the house, you will have to sign the contract and fill out forms. I know reading pages of small print can be boring, but make sure you read it all very carefully so you know exactly what to expect.
It is really stressful if you have never done anything like this before, but there are so many places that may help if you are struggling. But once this is all done, you can finally relax and forget about it all!
